The Narrative Theory

  • Equilibrium Phase: The main family of protagonists locks their home down for the annual purge. They do not worry since they have a new security system and do not believe they are targets.
  • Disruption Phase: While viewing the security systems footage, the young boy notices a man outside pleading for someone to let him in. He disables the security system just in time for him to run inside the family's home. The boy's parents immediatly reverse it. They try to find the stranger in case he is dangerous, but are unable to do so.
  • Realization Phase: A group of purgers rings their doorbell and asks to speak with the family. One purger explains that the stranger the boy allowed inside the home was their target for the night. They offer the family two options. They can either find and deliver the stranger outside to be purged, or they will break down the security system and kill everyone inside. The family is given a time limit.
  • Restored Order Phase: The stranger is not found and the home is broken into. The opposing sides begin killing each other. One protagonist, the husband/father, dies. A second major group of antagonists, the family's neighbors, defeats the initial purgers since they want to kill the family themselves. The stranger comes out of hiding to help the homeowners. He ensures no more killings take place.
  • Equilibrium Restored Phase: The purge comes to an end. It is no longer legal to kill until the next purge.
